Is Dereck Lively II playing tonight against Warriors? Latest on Mavericks center's status explored for Emirates NBA Cup game (Nov. 12)

Dereck Lively II is listed as "questionable" for the Dallas Mavericks' high-profile NBA Cup matchup against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. The 12th overall pick from the 2023 draft has been sidelined for Dallas' last four games due to a right shoulder sprain but is steadily progressing toward a return.

The young center traveled with the team to San Francisco and participated in Monday's practice. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, a final decision on Lively’s availability will be made on Tuesday, based on how he feels prior to tip off.

"Just got to see how I feel when I wake up, but it’s been steady progress and I’m feeling good," Lively II said.

Prior to his shoulder injury, the young center was excelling in his role, providing the Mavericks with a crucial boost off the bench. Lively's energy and presence on the glass have made a significant impact. In his six games this season, he has averaged 9.3 points on an impressive 70.6% shooting from the field, along with 8.2 rebounds per game.

Lively last played for the Mavericks on Nov. 3 against the Orlando Magic and finished the game with a double-double in 20 minutes. He scored 11 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Dereck Lively II ready to take 3-point shots

Before the start of the 2024-25 season, Dereck Lively II expressed his readiness to take shots from beyond the arc. Speaking to reporters on media day, Lively shared his intention to attempt one or two 3-pointers but emphasized that he wouldn’t force it, only taking the shot if a clear opportunity arises.

"Whatever shots come to me, I'm going to take," Lively II had said. "Some games it might be one to two (threes), some games it might be more."

Lively II has yet to attempt a 3-point shot in his six games this season with the Mavericks. In fact, the young center has only recorded two attempts from beyond the arc in his career so far.
