Is Ja Morant playing tonight against Hawks? Latest on Grizzlies point guard's availability (Dec. 21)
Ja Morant will not play for the Memphis Grizzlies in their road game against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. The star point guard was listed as "doubtful" on the Grizzlies' injury report due to lower back soreness and was later downgraded to out. Morant gave fans a scare during Memphis’ dominant 144-93 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.
The injury occurred in the third quarter when Morant took a hard fall following a collision with the Warriors’ Kevon Looney. The two-time All-Star was seen clutching his lower back before hobbling to the bench.
Although he briefly returned to the floor to attempt free throws, Morant exited the game shortly after a jump ball was called and headed to the locker room, not returning for the remainder of the contest. Morant’s night ended with nine points in 17 minutes, along with three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Unfortunately, injuries have plagued the former Murray State standout’s season. Last month, he missed eight games due to a hip injury after an awkward fall and he has been dealing with recurring back and knee issues in recent weeks.
In total, Ja Morant has missed 11 of the Grizzlies' 28 games this season, appearing in just 17. Despite his absence, Memphis has performed remarkably well under head coach Taylor Jenkins, holding an impressive 19-9 record and sitting second in the Western Conference standings.
