"It's almost like we forgot who he was" - Giannis Antetokounmpo gets a reminder of Klay Thompson's talent after his heroics against Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo had the best seat in the house as Klay Thompson brought up his season-high performance against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday. The Golden State Warriors shooting guard produced 38 points on 15-of-24 shooting as he helped the Dubs roll to an easy 122-109 win against the defending champions. Thompson also hit his season-best of eight three-pointers during the game while playing in front of home fans at Chase Center.
Antetokounmpo, who finished with 31 points and eight boards in the first loss for the Bucks in seven games, had the best possible explanation for Klay Thompson's stellar night. The Greek superstar told the media in the post-game media interaction:
“We haven’t seen him a while due to his injury. It’s almost like we forgot who he was.”
Thompson started the game slowly, scoring only four points in the first quarter. But he then came out strong in the second period, torching the Bucks for 17 points. He tallied eight and nine points in the other two 12-minute periods after halftime to produce his best scoring game of the season.
"It was a fun night at the office," says Klay Thompson after coming up with best NBA game since returning from injury
It took Klay Thompson two-and-a-half years to return to playing NBA basketball. It took him even more time to come up with a 35-point plus game. The last time Thompson went beyond 35 points was on 8 March 2019 when he scored 39 points against the Denver Nuggets.
Tonight's game against Milwaukee made it a little over three years for Thompson to get past the mark. But Thompson wanted more. He told the media on putting together a game like this against the defending champions:
"It feels great. Does wonders for your confidence, for my confidence. I really wanted 40 points. 38's great, but 40 just sounds better. But whatever, it was a fun night at the office to say the least."
The game against the Milwaukee Bucks marked just the second instance of Thompson getting past the 30-point mark this season. It was Thompson's second-most efficient field goal shooting (62.5%) game and tied his third-best three-point shooting (57.1%) game since making his return from injury. The 33:51 that he played against the visiting Bucks is also the most time Thompson has spent on the floor this season for the Golden State Warriors.
