"It's disrespect, right?" - Grizzlies rookie Yuki Kawamura hilariously credits Ja Morant for teaching him 'too small’ celebration
Ja Morant has struck a great friendship with Memphis Grizzlies rookie Yuki Kawamura. The Japanese guard, who stands at 5-foot-8, has become a fan favorite despite barely playing for his team in his rookie season. While Kawamura might not be playing much on the court, he is certainly learning Morant's style of basketball.
On November 3, Legion Hoops posted on X, formerly known as "Twitter" that Ja Morant had already taught Kawamura the "too small" celebration yesterday. According to Memphis Grizzlies reporter Drew Hill, Kawamura said that although he doesn't like it, he would do it when his teammates dunk on their opponents.
"So small, right? It's disrespect, right? I don't like that. But if my teammates dunk on them, from the bench, I'll do it," Kawamura said.
Yuki Kawamura is officially the smallest player in the league. He was acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies in September, as his training camp contract was converted into a two-way. He also represented Japan in the Paris Olympics over the summer.
So far, the 23-year-old Japanese guard has shown a great sense of presence on the court. He has a unique ability to pass the ball and get his teammates involved. With Morant still playing as the primary guard with Scotty Pippen Jr. playing the backup point guard, it will take some time for Yuki to solidify his position.
Ja Morant and Yuki Kawamura have struck a great friendship in their first year together
The addition of Yuki Kawamura has not only brought the Memphis Grizzlies a backup point guard but also a great friend to their superstar player Ja Morant. Since the 2024-25 season began, Morant and Kawamura have shared some memorable moments together on and off the court.
The Grizzlies faced the Utah Jazz in their season-opening game. They won the game, 126-124. After winning his first game of the season, Morant posted a story on his Instagram featuring Kawamura as they celebrated the victory.
"First dub with my dawg," Morant wrote in the caption.
Later, when the Grizzlies played their home opener against the Orlando Magic, Kawamura showed some dance moves with Morant cheering him on the side. Just a few seconds later Kawamura hit the griddy dance with Ja Morant.
The Japanese rookie is averaging under 2.5 minutes on the floor thus far. While on a two-way contract with the Grizzlies, he might have to spend a good amount of time in the G-League before the Grizzlies call him up for a full-time assignment.
