“Ja is definitely in that group for sure” – Kevin Durant asserts the NBA is a cluster of talented athletes, speculates ‘a lot of faces’ could be the face of the league
Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets has been in the league for quite some time and has seen different kinds of players throughout his career. But one player that has captivated him and almost everybody is Ja Morant, who Durant believes to be the next face of the league.
Following a tough loss against the Memphis Grizzlies last night, Kevin Durant was asked what he thought of Ja Morant. Morant is one of the most explosive players in the league, and Morant's game is electrifying. But Durant didn't single out the Grizzlies star for being the next face of the NBA. The 12-time All-Star went on to say that Morant belongs to an elite group of superstars.
During the postgame press conference, KD praised Morant for how talented he is. He had this to say:
"The most marketable guy in our league, the face of our leage going forward, so many kids are inspired by what he does," Durant on Morant.
When asked if he thinks Ja Morant is the next face of the NBA, the Olympic gold medalist said this:
"Yeah, for sure. I mean, there's a lot of faces. You could tell the changing of the eras in the league as time goes on. Last 10 years, and this next 15 years. You see the guys that are in the league right now that are going to help push the game forward."
"It's a group of us that do it and Ja is definitely in that group for sure."
These compliments came off a loss against Memphis, where both Durant and Kyrie Irving put up 37 points each. But despite that, it was Morant and the Grizzlies that came on top. Morant scored 38 points while going for 66% from the three-point area. Not only that, but Desmond Bane also played big for the Grizzlies and also had 38 points on 72% from downtown.
Their second game against each other will be on November 20th at the Barclays Center.
Early season jitters or does Kevin Durant need more help?
Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets are off to a slow start this season. Despite the incredible performances of Durant and Irving, the Nets have a 1-2 record. It could be because the team is still finding its footing after making notable moves over the summer. But even their third star hasn't performed well in all three of their games.
Looking at the stats, both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are the only ones averaging more than 20 points. The next player with the highest point-production outside of Durant and Irving is Nic Claxton, followed by Patty Mills. Ben Simmons isn't even averaging 10 points for the Nets this season. Simmons has also struggled to stay on the floor in the three games that the Nets have played so far.
Simmons has ended two games on the bench due to fouling out and it's clear that he needs some time to adjust. The former MVP doesn't need more help as he already has two All-Stars with him, but the Nets have to be on the same page. As a team, they need to have better defensive communication on the floor.
Kevin Durant could lead the Nets to the conference finals this season as long as the other players are consistent in their roles.
