What is Jamal Murray's contract extension with Nuggets: Salary, duration & more

The Denver Nuggets have secured one of their stars long-term after Jamal Murray reportedly agreed to sign an extension. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Murray has agreed to a four-year $208 million maximum extension to remain with the 2023 NBA champions.

With this deal, the Nuggets have given themselves some security at the point guard position, at least for the next five seasons.

With Murray agreeing to an extension, the next players that the front office will need to think about are likely Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun.

Gordon is still under contract for the next two seasons. However, the final year is a player option so he can opt out to become a free agent after the 2024-25 season.

As for Braun, he is still under his rookie contract. The Nuggets picked up his team option so he will remain with the team this coming season. The team also has the option to keep him for the 2025-26 campaign as far as a rookie contract goes.

If the front office chooses to pick up his option next year, he will become a restricted free agent in 2026-27.

What is Jamal Murray's current contract and what is the duration of his new one?

Despite already signing a four-year $208 million extension, Jamal Murray is actually still under contract for 2024-25 from the last extension he signed. Murray signed his designated rookie extension back in 2019. That was a five-year $170 million contract which takes him through to the end of the upcoming season.

Had he not signed his latest extension, he would have become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2025.

With Murray's new contract, the Nuggets have secured his services at least until the end of the 2028-29 season—the same year when Nikola Jokic's contract expires and he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

That is of course assuming that the Serbian big man picks up his player option to remain with the team for 2027-28. The Nuggets have lost some key players in the past two summers. Namely, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope this year and Bruce Brown immediately after winning the 2023 title.

Despite these losses, the Nuggets are likely hoping to remain competitive in the Western Conference for the next few seasons by securing Jamal Murray.

While they've arguably gotten weaker by losing two key pieces to their championship, they at least still have Jokic and Murray as well as Michael Porter Jr. who is still under contract until the 2026-27 season.

With most of their core, especially both of their stars still present, the Nuggets can hope to attract the attention of future free agents who want a shot at winning a championship in the next few seasons.
