Kareem Abdul-Jabbar cuts a broken man courtside as LeBron James chases record, sparks hilarious reactions
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar didn't seem enthralled sitting courtside as LeBron James inched closer to his all-time scoring record during the OKC Thunder vs. LA Lakers game on Tuesday.
Abdul-Jabbar held the record for 38 years and the expressions he pulled courtside sparked hilarious reactions from fans online.
Here are some of the best reactions on Twitter:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James' rocky relationship
LeBron James is the ideal candidate to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the all-time scoring list. His achievements speak for themselves. Like Kareem, LeBron has been a model citizen off the court, often staying out of trouble and using his platform to fight against social injustice.
However, Abdul-Jabbar and James' relationship has been rocky to say the least. The two haven't seen eye-to-eye, especially over the last year or so. Kareem has taken shots at James for various reasons, ranging from his celebrations on the court to some of his decision-making off of it.
However, it's a sign of respect that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in attendance to watch LeBron James break his record, even if he didn't appear too excited about it.
LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar embrace as the former becomes all-time scoring leader
The NBA celebrated LeBron James becoming the all-time leading scorer with a ceremony just after he scored his 36th point of the game with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joined commissioner Adam Silver and LeBron on the court.
Kareem passed the ball to LeBron as a token of appreciation. The two also hugged. While giving his acceptance speech, James asked the fans in the arena to give a standing ovation to "The Captain."
Here's what he said:
"To be able to be in the presence of such a legend as great as Kareem means so much to me, it's very humbling. Please give a standing ovation to "The Captain" please."
Meanwhile, Abdul-Jabbar hailed his successor for his longevity and leadership on the court. The two legends may not have had an excellent relationship until now, but this moment could see them move past it.
