Kevin Durant cooks online 'gatekeeper' who called him 'team jumper' in debate about having a statue: "You don't matter"
Kevin Durant is known to dabble in social media, and the NBA superstar found himself defending his career achievements against a fan account on Thursday. The Phoenix Suns star called out a fan who referred to him as a "team jumper." The fan also questioned whether the two-time NBA champion deserves a statue once his career is completed.
During a discussion with well-known sports media personality Kay Adams on her show "Up and Adams" earlier this week, Durant said he doubted he would receive a statue once his career is over. That led to the following comment from the X account of Jacob, also known as "Jacobtheclipper," on the social media site:
"I appreciate that he acknowledges he's a team jumper and that he doesn't truly deserve a statue. This is the outcome of choosing the easier path ... Legends like Jordan, Dirk, Wade, and Kobe are examples of players who persevered and earned the affection of their cities, and as a result, they will forever be honored with statues."
The comment was spotted by Durant and he returned to social media to respond to the post.
"Jacob, you will never know what it takes to be on this level, you tweet as if you're the gatekeeper of this here culture of basketball. You don't matter to not one person in this business...just to let u know," replied Durant.
Kevin Durant's comment has now been deleted.
Jacob's message refers to Durant switching teams and moving around the league over his 18-year NBA career. The former MVP started his career with the Seattle SuperSonics franchise (now the Oklahoma City Thunder) before signing with the Golden State Warriors in 2016. After winning back-to-back titles in the Bay Area, he shifted to the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 and then the Suns in 2023.
The X account of "Jacobtheclipper," has over 11,400 followers and is popular with NBA fans, and particularly Los Angeles Clippers fans.
Kevin Durant becomes 8th player in NBA history to reach 29,000 points
While Kevin Durant is unsure whether he will get a statue after his career is over, his status as an all-time great is without question. The two-time champion added to his Hall of Fame resume last week as he reached 29,000 career points, becoming just the eighth player in NBA history to reach the milestone.
“I’ve got to give credit to the people who have helped me since I was a kid,” Durant said of his achievement, per NBA.com. “Teammates who passed me the ball, set screens for me, coaches who drew up plays for me.”
Durant is now 2,379 points behind the great Wilt Chamberlain for seventh place in the all-time scoring list.
