Knicks make major decision about Patrick Ewing, franchise legend to return in new role: Report
Patrick Ewing played 15 years for the New York Knicks. The Hall of Famer is reportedly gearing up for a return to the iconic franchise.
On Friday, ESPN's Malika Andrews reported that the Knicks plan on hiring Ewing as a basketball ambassador, where he'll work alongside Tom Thibodeau and members of the front office.
The Knicks drafted Patrick Ewing with the No. 1 overall pick in 1985. While his numerous playoff runs never resulted in a championship, he was the franchise's top all-time talent. During his decade-plus long run in New York, Ewing averaged 22.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks.
After retiring as a player in 2002, Ewing transitioned into coaching. He was an assistant for numerous NBA franchises up until 2017 and then decided to make the move to college.
Ewing returned to his alma mater, Georgetown, to become the head coach of their men's program in 2017. He'd served in this role for six years and posted a record of 75-109 while making the NCAA tournament once (2021).
Patrick Ewing looking forward to reunion with New York Knicks
Following his hire, Patrick Ewing expressed his gratitude as he returned to a place he calls home.
"As I said the day my number 33 jersey lifted into the rafters at MSG, I will always be a Knick and I will always be a New Yorker. I can't wait to get started in this new position and to officially be back with the organization that I love so much," said Ewing in a statement.
"The Garden has always been my home and I'm looking forward to working with Leon Rose, Coach Thibodeau, the team and everyone else that makes this place so special."
The report indicates Ewing will be floating around the franchise in multiple facets, but it's clear who he will be spending a lot of time with. That being the Knicks' top centers, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson.
As a dominant two-way player in his career, Ewing can mentor both of these players. Especially KAT, as he prepares to be a star player in one of the world's biggest sports markets.
After making multiple big trades this offseason, the Knicks are looking to contend for a title right away. Bringing in another smart basketball mind like Ewing should help.
