Lakers insider reports Rajon Rondo's 2022 domestic violence case ruled him out of previous coaching considerations
Former NBA star Rajon Rondo is reportedly being considered for the LA Lakers' coaching staff under whoever is hired to replace Darvin Ham as the team's head coach. Lakers insider Anthony Irwin revealed that Rondo was previously not considered for coaching positions because of a domestic violence case, but the case was dismissed in 2022.
"Rajon Rondo’s name gets mentioned here as someone the Lakers are considering hiring to whoever their head coach’s staff. He had a domestic violence case dismissed in 2022 that kept him from that kind of consideration in previous coaching searches," Irwin tweeted.
Rajon Rondo was previously accused of pulling a gun on the mother of his children, Ashely Bachelor, and had an order filed against him on May 13, 2022. However, the domestic violence dispute was reportedly dismissed after the NBA veteran reached an agreement with Bachelor.
As one of the smartest players to ever suit up in the NBA, Rondo would likely make a great fit on the Lakers' coaching staff. The two-time NBA champion was crucial off the bench for the Lakers as he won his second championship with the team in 2020 before retiring in 2022.
Moreover, the two-time NBA champion would likely have Lakers star LeBron James' support for the hiring decision. Rondo's 2020 championship teammate had high praise for him when he announced his retirement in 2022.
“One of the best players I ever played with. Obviously, his IQ was out of this world. I was very lucky to get to team up with him," James said. "Do always talked about if he ever teamed up with me, he knew we could win a championship. And we did that."
Rajon Rondo was arrested earlier this year
Rajon Rondo was arrested in January in Indiana and was booked on three separate charges: possession of paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, an Indiana State Police trooper pulled Rondo over for having no plate on the back of his Tesla. Moreover, the trooper stated that he smelled marijuana and found a small amount of weed, drug paraphernalia, and a gun upon searching the car.
Rajon Rondo has reportedly been prohibited from carrying firearms since his 2022 domestic violence accusation. According to Jackson County Jail records, the former NBA star was put behind bars before he was released on a $705 bond.
