Lakers trade news: Rob Pelinka drops massive revelation on Anthony Davis' replacement at center
The LA Lakers need a big man after trading Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Doncic on Saturday. Even though the team has players like Jaxson Hayes and Jarred Vanderbilt, its frontcourt depth looks thinner after Davis's departure. The team's general manager, Rob Pelinka, addressed the concern on Tuesday.
Trading for a big man wasn't at the top of Pelinka's to-do list in the 2024-25 NBA season, despite the plea from Davis. Before he was traded, AD was interviewed by ESPN's Shams Charania, who spoke about wanting to play with another big man to revert to playing power forward.
This time, the Lakers are dedicated to acquiring a skilled big man to complement their future star. Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported what the general manager shared during Doncic's inaugural press conference.
“We know that our roster has continued work to do to be complete. … We’re going to build a roster that fits JJ Redick’s basketball philosophy. … We know we have a need for a big. The market for a big … is very dry,” Pelinka said.
ESPN's Dave McMenamin shared insights on Pelinka's intentions. Per his report, the Los Angeles front office might make a significant move to address their frontcourt issues in the offseason. The insider also mentioned that discussions will take place with Lakers coach JJ Redick to evaluate how his coaching style meshes with the team.
The team may want to reconsider the names linked with them this season. Jonas Valanciunas, the Washington Wizards center, is rumored to be among their trade targets along with Robert Williams III from the Portland Trail Blazers. Ultimately, a player's fit within Redick's vision will be the deciding factor.

Doncic wishes Kobe and Gigi Bryant saw him join the Lakers
With Luka Doncic, the Lakers seem to have their next superstar of the future. During his introductory press conference, the 6-foot-6 guard recalled his interaction with the late Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi.
Bryant and Gigi sat courtside while the team played against the Mavericks and Doncic. To get the star's attention, the legend heckled him in Slovenian, which caught his attention. The five-time All-Star spoke about it on Tuesday.
“First of all, I remember that exact moment that happened,” Doncic said. “It always stayed in my mind. It was an amazing moment, just for Kobe to know my name was amazing for me. I just wish Kobe and Gigi were here to see this moment, and I’m excited about this new journey and happy to be here.”
Doncic will remain wearing No. 77 in his jersey with the team.
