Luka Doncic trade: Taking a look at 3 potential teams the Slovenian superstar could join if he leaves the Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have gotten off to a slow start to the season as they are just 16-16 and currently in ninth place in the Western Conference. While the three-time All-Star has yet to express frustrations with the Mavericks organization, there has been plenty of speculation that he could eventually do so if Dallas fails to build a contender around him.

While every team would certainly look to acquire Doncic, who will turn 24 in February and is already an established superstar, three teams stand out as potential suitors. If Doncic had a no-trade clause or an expiring contract, it would be possible that he could force his way to his preferred destination. However, with plenty of team control, Dallas will be looking for a massive haul, eliminating teams such as the LA Lakers and Brooklyn Nets, who are short on trade assets.

The top potential suitor for Doncic is another big market franchise, the New York Knicks. It is no secret that the Knicks have been looking for a star to be the face of their franchise. While they were unwilling to put all of their assets on the table for Donovan Mitchell, it is almost certain that they would do so for Doncic. The Knicks have seven first-round picks over the next three drafts, and 11 tradeable first-round picks, overall. They also possess young talented players who would surely intrigue the Mavericks' front office.

While the Golden State Warriors don't have the massive amount of picks that the Knicks have available, they do have the rights to their own first-round pick in every year except 2024. The Warriors also have several young players filled with potential who have already shown an ability to produce at the NBA level.

Finally, the Oklahoma City Thunder represent a wild card as they don't often pursue talent via trade, but players like Doncic aren't often available. The Thunder have 15 first-round picks over the next five drafts, including 10 in the next three years. They also have a roster filled with young talent, as only two players on their roster are over the age of 25. Furthermore, with Doncic locked in through 2026-2027, they wouldn't have to worry about him bolting in free agency. Pairing Doncic with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would give the Thunder the best backcourt in the league.

The most likely option, however, is that Luka Doncic stays in Dallas. While he may start to get uneasy, the front office has all of the leverage as he has plenty of time remaining on his contract.

Luka Doncic traded by Atlanta Hawks

Luka Doncic has been traded once before in his NBA career. Immediately upon being selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2018 NBA Draft, Doncic was shipped to the Dallas Mavericks. In return, the Hawks received fifth overall pick Trae Young and the Mavericks 2019 first-round pick.

While there have been debates regarding which of the two players has had a better career, both franchises have seemingly been happy with the trade. It remains to be seen if either player can lead their franchise to a title.
