Magic Johnson asserts Showtime Lakers are one of greatest teams ever - "Pat Riley is to me the best coach that's ever lived"
Magic Johnson's time with the LA Lakers was iconic, and Pat Riley had a lot to do with it. Before Riley turned the Miami Heat into a championship franchise, he led the Showtime Lakers into becoming a dynasty.
Magic Johnson appeared as a guest on a recent episode of Shannon Sharpe's Club Shay Shay. On the show, they discussed which teams were in the discussion as the greatest team of all-time.
Johnson, who spent all of his time in the NBA with the Lakers, believes that they are the greatest team in the history of the league. With a stacked team like the Showtime Lakers, it's hard to argue with his logic.
"We're definitely one of the greatest teams ever because we had everything, we could do everything," Johnson confidently said.
"We can defend you, and then get out and run. So we can score inside, outside and on the break, that's hard to defend."
Magic Johnson continued by complimenting Pat Riley's coaching abilities.
"Pat Riley is to me the best coach that's ever lived."
"But he could make in-game adjustments that were critical and also he motivated you."
Pat Riley took over the Lakers as their head coach back in the 1981-82 season. He was the coach who introduced a fast-paced offense into the team's system. In his first season with the Lakers, Riley won the Larry O'Brien trophy and became the leader of the squad until 1990. He led the Lakers to four straight finals appearances and won four titles with the team.
Since then, Riley has carried the same amount of tenacity to the teams that he coached. Although he didn't win a title with the New York Knicks, Riley transformed the team into one of the best in the 90's. Since 1995, Riley has been a part of the Miami Heat franchise and has continued to be successful.
