Why is Glen Davis in prison?

In May 2024, the 38-year-old Glen Davis — who last played in the NBA during the 2014-2015 season — was sentenced to 40 months in prison. A federal judge handed Davis this sentence following a November 2023 conviction, which involved charges of defrauding the NBA Players' Health and Benefit Welfare Plan.

Aside from Davis, 17 other former NBA players were sentenced in this case. Terrence Williams, who played for the New Jersey Nets and the Houston Rockets, received the stiffest penalty: a 10-year prison sentence for being identified as a ringleader figure of a multi-million dollar fraudulent scheme.

During the hearing, Davis — who was also asked to pay $80,000 in restitution —made an emotional plea to Judge Valerie E. Caproni.

"When I lost basketball, I lost myself," Davis said. "I ask you, your honor, to help me get back to who I am."

Despite this last-minute plea, the judge handed the prison sentence. On his way to jail, Davis posted a story on his Instagram account.
