Massive Jason Kidd update emerges amid New York Knicks coaching search: Report
The New York Knicks' search for the head coach is continuing with three big names still being considered a possibility for the top spot. According to the latest update from NBA reporter Ian Bagley, the Dallas Mavericks' current coach, Jason Kidd, is still a possibility for the Knicks.
Since the search for the new top coaching role was rolled out, Kidd was not a serious candidate, at least above other big names considered for the role. However, Bagley reported that, according to people within the Mavs, Kidd's relationship with the team could factor into the Knicks having a chance to bring him on board.
The former player-turned-coach has been very successful in his coaching career. He was the assistant coach for the LA Lakers when they won the 2020 NBA title. Last year, he led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA finals, eventually losing to the Boston Celtics.
Moreover, one possible reason the Knicks are eyeing Kidd is his role in Giannis Antetokounmpo's development into an all-time great from 2014 to 2018. According to Woelfel's Press Box's Gery Woelfel, New York was also trying to "make a tsunami-type offer to acquire Antetokounmpo from the Bucks."
Furthermore, another reason the Knicks are targeting Kidd is his potential to help develop Jalen Brunson into a scoring point guard. According to the New York Post, Jason Kidd and the Knicks share mutual interests. However, New York is yet to get permission from Dallas to speak with him.
The New York Knicks are also considering Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown for the top coaching job
Jason Kidd is only one of the big coaching names that have been linked to the Knicks' search. One of the names is Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. According to Ian Bagley, Jenkins was already getting his first interview with the team.
Former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown is also a serious contender for the role. According to the NBA Insider, he is expected to be interviewed after Jenkins. Brown was instrumental in elevating the Kings to playoff status in recent seasons.
Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan was another name being considered by the Knicks front office. However, he is no longer in contention, as he's expected to sign an extension with the Bulls.
