“MJ is washed”, “Hit MJ with the reverse uno”, “Now they trade for Russ” - Fans mercilessly troll Michael Jordan and Charlotte Hornets as Steve Clifford agrees deal to return as head coach
Fans have hit out at Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan for hiring Steve Clifford as head coach.
After failing to reach the playoffs once again, the Hornets fired James Borrego. Borrego spent four years with the team and failed to guide them to the postseason even once.
The Hornets appeared to have settled on Kenny Atkinson, but he changed his mind and chose to remain with the Golden State Warriors. This forced the Hornets to turn to Clifford, who was previously their head coach from 2013 to 2018.
Fans were quick to take to social media to question Jordan's decision.
In his first stint with the Hornets, Clifford finished with a .478 win percentage in the regular season. In 410 games, he managed 196 wins and led them to the playoffs twice. Since his departure in 2018, they have failed to reach the postseason even once.
Charlotte Hornets have reached the playoffs 3 times since Michael Jordan became owner
Jordan took over as the Hornets owner in March 2010, becoming the first former player to become the majority owner of an NBA team. Since his takeover, the Hornets have not had much success.
They have reached the playoffs just three times since then and have never made it past the first round. In the last two seasons, they made the play-in tournament but fell just short.
Michael Jordan, who was part of the legendary Chicago Bulls dynasty as a player, has failed to replicate that winning culture as an owner. As a player, he won six titles in six finals appearances between 1991 and 1998.
Although the Hornets do not have a superstar in their ranks, they do have exciting young talents. LaMelo Ball has been sensational since his rookie year and has drawn comparisons to Magic Johnson based on his style of play.
Jordan will be hoping that Ball can raise his game even further and help the Hornets break their playoff curse.
