"My boy took the top off the Maybach": Jaylen Brown makes smart remark on Jayson Tatum's new look

Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are spending their offseasons differently after leading the Boston Celtics to their 18th franchise championship in June. Brown, who won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, will have a longer vacation and well-deserved rest. Tatum, meanwhile, has been called for Team USA duty for the Olympics in Paris.

Tatum arrived two days late to training camp for “personal reasons.” When he showed up to join a star-studded cast that included LeBron James, Steph Curry, Joel Embiid and Celtics teammate Jrue Holiday, “JT” surprised everybody. Tatum came in with a hairstyle he hadn’t worn since his first few years in the NBA.

Once the Boston Celtics showed Jayson Tatum's photo on Instagram, Jaylen Brown reacted:

“My boy took off the top of the Maybach”

Tatum hasn’t had close-cropped hair since his third year with the Boston Celtics during the 2019-20 season. When “Taco Jay” competed in the 2020 Japan Olympics, that was moved to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he had already grown his hair. It wasn’t a surprise that many were taken aback by his appearance during his first day at training camp.

Jaylen Brown, who he has spent most of his NBA career with, couldn’t hold back from trolling his close friend. Brown may have been surprised by the new look but he won’t raise an eyebrow if his Celtics co-superstar plays well in the Olympics. Tatum, who made his mark three years ago and is expected to have another key role in the Americans’ gold medal campaign next month.

Jaylen Brown will be particularly cheering for Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum in the Olympics

Most basketball fans likely knew Jayson Tatum was going to be part of the USA Basketball team that will compete in the Olympics. After the Americans' fourth-placed finish at the 2023 World Cup, rumors quickly spread that LeBron James wanted to form a super team for Paris. Among the names that the four-time MVP reportedly called were Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Steph Curry and Jayson Tatum.

While all the aforementioned players were seemingly locked in for the Olympics, Jrue Holiday wasn’t. It wasn’t until Steve Kerr emphasized Holiday’s crucial role in Japan that convinced fans the guard was headed for Paris as well. Jaylen Brown will be rooting for Team USA to succeed and for his Boston Celtics teammates to do well.

Brown was also likely considered for a spot but Kerr and his staff likely picked Anthony Edwards, Devin Booker and Jrue Holiday over him. “JB” may not be on the court but count on him to support Team USA, particularly his Celtics buddies.
