The Boston Celtics still have a slim chance of winning the Eastern Conference over the Milwaukee Bucks

The Boston Celtics blew their best chance of reclaiming the NBA’s best record when they lost to the Washington Wizards. Boston’s defeat dropped them to 52-24, three games behind the Milwaukee Bucks (55-21) for the best win-loss slate in the entire league.

For the reigning NBA Eastern Conference champs to ascend to the top, they will need plenty of cooperation from the Bucks. The Cs will have to go 5-0 in their last remaining games and hope Milwaukee struggles to a 3-2 mark.

An alternative scenario would be the Celtics going 4-1 but the Bucks will have to drop 3-5 games to hand Boston the best record.

Whoever gets the top seed between those two teams could determine who represents the East in the 2023 NBA Finals.

The Milwaukee Bucks earned a painful lesson last season. They punted their remaining games to avoid the Brooklyn Nets in what could be a brutal first-round series. The Boston Celtics, on the other hand, kept their foot on the pedal and won the East.

The Celtics ultimately swept the Kevin Durant-led Nets before dispatching the Bucks in seven hard-fought games. Boston clinched the series against Milwaukee on their home floor.

The Bucks will be playing the second night of a back-to-back schedule but will be in front of their home fans. Boston are well-rested and raring to atone for their unexpected loss to the Washington Wizards.

Milwaukee, after holding pole position for over a month, may want to keep it that way with a win against the Celtics. Both teams are tied with one game apiece in the season series. A win by either Boston or Milwaukee would be a huge step in winning the conference.

NBA MVP Nikola Jokic is questionable for the Denver Nuggets against the New Orleans Pelicans

The Denver Nuggets are relatively safer than the Milwaukee Bucks as far as holding the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference is concerned. Denver (51-24) is 3.5 games ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies (48-28) for the best win-loss slate in their conference.

NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, who has been a workhorse yet again this season for the Nuggets, has already played 67 games. The “Joker” hasn’t missed a game since Feb. 5 when Denver’s medical staff gave him the night off.

Denver’s franchise player is on the injury list due to tightness in his right calf. The Nuggets will also be playing the first night of a back-to-back set tonight, which puts Jokic’s availability in jeopardy.

If the leading NBA candidate is unavailable, the New Orleans Pelicans could take advantage of that.

New Orleans (38-38) is in the ninth spot but only 1.5 games ahead of the Dallas Mavericks (37-40), who are the 11th seed. A win by the Pelicans tonight will push them closer to at least a play-in spot.
