NBA HOFer coach George Karl ponders possibility of Donald Trump's 'MAGA' movement coming through 'in spite' of him

George Karl is the latest of a long line of figures on the NBA landscape to comment on the United States presidential race. Karl, a Kamala Harris supporter, hypothesized that Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' movement could unite America in support of Harris and her campaign rather than Trump's with a post on X.

"How cool would it be if [Donald Trump]'s ultimate legacy is he Made America Great Again, and more United than before, not because of him but in spite of him," Karl posted to X on Saturday afternoon.

Karl has offered immense support to Kamala Harris after pleading with the current President and former Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, to drop out of the race.

Karl got his wish 11 days following this post when Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Kamala Harris as his replacement. Harris has since had Karl's full support.

George Karl organizes "Hoops for Harris" Zoom call with several NBA figures

Last month, George Karl looked to spread awareness and support for the Kamala Harris campaign. Karl hosted a Zoom call so he and other pro-Harris NBA figures could show their support.

Karl took to X to promote his "Hoops for Harris" Zoom call, asking followers for their thoughts.

The movement received immense support, and an X profile was even created to further progress the Zoom call to a brand to support the Democratic nominee.

The call eventually took place on September 4. It was co-hosted by basketball journalist Mike Wise and actor/comedian Alonzo Bodden. It featured notable ex-NBA players such as Eddie Johnson and Rex Chapman, as well as Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, a prominent Harris supporter.

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr was unable to attend the call but offered his fullest support to the movement. Kerr publically endorsed Kamala Harris with an appearance and speech at the Democratic National Convention.

George Karl, who is sixth all-time in NBA wins as a coach, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022 and won the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2012-13.
