Steve Kerr confident Klay Thompson will rediscover his form soon
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr is confident that Klay Thompson will regain his rhythm soon. Thompson's season hasn't gone according to plan. The five-time All-Star guard has struggled with his shot. He is shooting 34.6% from the floor, including 28.6% from 3-point range this season.
Kerr reminded reporters about Thompson's successful comeback from injury last season when speaking about his poor run thus far.
"He's just got to get his legs underneath him," said Kerr (via NBC Sports). "He's only had one exhibition game, so under normal circumstances, this would kind of be the end of the exhibition season for him...
"Last year, when he came back from the injury, people talked about 'oh, he wasn't the same guy,' or whatever. He had six games where he had 30 or more. He was great in the playoffs."
The Golden State Warriors have been cautious with Klay Thompson's workload this season. It's his first full season in three years. Moreover, Thompson could only play one preseason game. While the rest of his teammates have been in rhythm, Thompson has struggled in that regard.
The sharpshooter has also been on a minutes restriction during the regular season. Through six games, he has played 25 minutes on average. These factors could have played a role in his lack of rhythm.
Klay Thompson's return to form could be key to Golden State Warriors shaking off their inconsistent start
The defending champions, the Golden State Warriors, have gotten off to a 3-3 start this season. The Warriors have had some new players come in this year and it's taking a while for them to mesh with the system. The Dubs have improved offensively since last year but their defensive standards have dropped.
The Warriors ranked second in defensive rating last season, but find themselves 20th this time around with a 113.6 rating. They've allowed 121 points per game so far. The Dubs are missing the services of defensive stalwarts Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr, who left the team in the offseason.
The Golden State Warriors would benefit massively from Klay Thompson regaining his form on both ends of the floor. Thompson was among the top two-way guards in the NBA prior to his two-year injury absence.
He displayed flashes of his abilities last season, so the Warriors will hope he can regain that form. As Steve Kerr said, Klay Thompson missing out on preseason action could be impacting his performances, and he could rediscover his best form once he gets enough games under his belt.
