Patrick Ewing career earnings: Looking at how much the ex-Georgetown coach and NBA veteran has earned so far

Patrick Ewing was the cornerstone of the New York Knicks during the late '80s and '90s. He was the main reason why the Knicks were a fearsome playoff team during that era. Ewing's classic battles against Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls were the stuff of legends.

During his 17-year career in the NBA, the Hall of Famer earned $118,223,608. He was one of the league's highest earners when he retired following the 2001-02 season.

Patrick Ewing deservedly earned his millions as New York's franchise cornerstone. The Knicks missed the playoffs just twice in Ewing's 15-year career in the Big Apple.

Behind Ewing, John Starks, Derek Harper, Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason and Charles Smith, the Knicks nearly won the 1994 NBA championship. They pushed the Hakeem Olajuwon-led Houston Rockets to a Game 7 before eventually losing the series.

The 1985-86 Rookie of the Year winner was also part of the 1998-1999 team that went to the NBA Finals. Ewing, however, was injured and didn't play in that championship round.

Despite his age, he would have been a significant contributor against the Spurs' twin-tower combination of David Robinson and Tim Duncan. New York lost 4-1 to the dynastic Spurs.

The legendary Knicks center later took on the head coaching job for Georgetown University in 2018. Ewing took over from his former coach John Thompson, who guided the Hoyas for 13 seasons.

Details of Ewing's contract as head coach of Georgetown weren't very clear. Recently, reports came out that he signed a six-year deal with a base salary of $2.6 million.

Including a yearly $200,000 bonus, Patrick Ewing was guaranteed to pocket $18.6 million to guide the Hoyas back to relevance.

Georgetown fires Patrick Ewing

Patrick Ewing's stint with the Georgetown Hoyas didn't end as many expected and hoped. He was recently fired by his alma mater.

The 11x NBA All-Star upon accepting the Hoyas' head-coaching job, acknowledged the intense pressure to deliver wins. In 2017, he said:

“People could call me ‘the greatest Hoya ever,’ but as you know, if I don’t win, there will be another coach here, sooner or later. Every coach knows, as soon as ... you dot the I’s and cross the T’s, the writing’s on the wall. At some point in your career, you’re going to be let go. That’s just life in coaching.”

In six seasons leading young college players out of Georgetown, he limped to a 75-109 record. Based on his own reckoning, he knew the writing was on the wall regarding his coaching career in the collegiate ranks.

Villanova overwhelmed Georgetown 80-48 in Patrick Ewing's last game as their head coach. Coincidentally, it happened at Madison Square Garden, where he anchored the New York Knicks to so many playoff victories.

Ewing had this to say to after news of his firing was made official:

"I wish the program nothing but success. I will always be a Hoya.”

BREAKING: Georgetown University announced today that Patrick Ewing will no longer serve as Head Men’s Basketball Coach and that it has begun a national search for new leadership of the program.
