Quincy Olivari stats tonight: How did Lakers' #41 fare in season debut in LeBron James' absence? (Dec. 8)
#41 Quincy Olivari made his highly anticipated NBA debut for the LA Lakers on Sunday in LeBron James' absence against the Portland Trail Blazers. Olivari had been one of the bright spots for the team in preseason. His fairytale run began with an Exhibit 10 contract, which turned into a two-way deal after an impressive run.
However, JJ Redick waited patiently to hand Olivari the next big gig of his career as an NBA player. Despite solid G League performances, the Lakers didn't call up the rookie from South Bay amid their struggles this season. But with LeBron James and Austin Reaves both sidelined, Redick needed guard depth on Sunday, which saw Olivari make his debut.
The rookie recorded his first career points on his first attempt from 3, shortly after he was subbed in. Olivari attempted two more shots from range but failed to convert. Redick eventually pulled him out after 5:34 minutes of action. He had three points and a +/- of -4 in the first half.
Quincy Olivari didn't enter the game again after his first-half action until the game was well under control late. He played three minutes late in the game with the Lakers up 19, but he didn't add to his box score. Olivari was a +/- -13.
Quincy Olivari has big aspirations after first NBA and Lakers points
Quincy Olivari's confidence has enabled him to make progress in his NBA career at a steady pace. He's also putting in the work to ensure he's taken note of without skipping past necessary steps. Whether it's putting in the hard yards at the G League level or fully embracing the role he's given in the main rotation as he did Sunday, Olivari has shown a willingness to make the most of his opportunities.
However, it doesn't stop there for the rookie. After scoring his first NBA and Lakers points, Olivari has vowed to score 50,000 more as he progresses in his career.
"I hope it’s 3 points of 50,000 … I like to dream big," Olivari told reporters after the game.
He didn't necessarily have a spectacular debut, but Olivari seemed unfazed when he took his only three shot attempts, including the first which he made after finding himself open. He may not have playing time on offer for the time being, but if LA makes some trades and loses guard depth, JJ Redick may look into playing the rookie more.
