Reports: Al Horford has signed an extension with Boston Celtics for $20 million
It looks like Al Horford has found a home in Boston again. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Horford and the Celtics have agreed on a two-year $20 million contract extension.
This Boston tenure is Horford’s second stint with the Celtics but it looks like he is going to be staying longer this time.
Horford previously played for Boston between 2016 and 2019 before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
This is the big man's second season in his second stint with the Celtics, and is now set for two more years. This could be his longest stint in a city besides his native squad, the Atlanta Hawks.
After spending his first nine years in the league in Atlanta, Horford moved to the Celtics for three seasons.
He was traded back to Boston from the OKC Thunder in 2020 and has been a reliable big for the Celtics ever since.
If he can maintain his form, he could stay in Boston for longer. We know this team appreciates him.
Is the Al Horford extension worth it for Boston?
Horford had a great post season run with his Celtics teammates last season. Boston currently has eight power forwards and three centers on their roster. These numbers seem to disagree with the extension.
However, once we understand how the Celtics play basketball, it makes sense to have so many bigs.
Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart are all incredibly fast and play aggressive defense. Therefore, Boston is smart to build size around its trio. It's also one reason why teams are struggling against them this season.
Al Horford's experience and basketball IQ gives a huge boost to this Celtics team. His vision and knowledge will only help Boston win more games as the season progresses.
Since the contract is not too taxing on their payroll, the extension seems to be a good decision by the organization. Additionally, players, fans and the city of Boston have supported Al Horford, which is always a good thing.
