Stan Van Gundy opens up on hilarious Twitter exchange with Kevin Durant - "You gotta get the 'Urban Dictionary' and s**t"
Stan Van Gundy, a former NBA coach who is now a television analyst, has always been vocal about basketball on Twitter.
But on Jan. 13, Van Gundy had a funny Twitter exchange with Kevin Durant as he didn't understand the slang term KD used in response to his tweet. In a podcast interview with Quentin Richardson, Van Gundy said:
"Then everybody was like, 'Yo, Stan, come on, man. You coached in the NBA. You gotta get with the Urban Dictionary and s**t.'"
The brief and funny exchange between Kevin Durant and Stan Van Gundy turned into a meme for a few weeks on social media.
The funny exchange between Kevin Durant and Stan Van Gundy on Twitter
On Jan. 13, Stan Van Gundy, who coached the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Pelicans, tweeted about load management in the NBA:
"90’s NBA teams had just a trainer and a strength coach, they practiced more often and harder and played more back to backs. Teams now have huge medical & 'performance' staffs and value rest over practice. Yet injuries and games missed are way up. Something’s not working!"
Kevin Durant, in agreement with Van Gundy, tweeted this in reply:
"Stan spittin..."
In confusion about what Durant meant, Van Gundy responded:
"No. I’m not criticizing players. I’m saying that we are getting something wrong in how we prepare and train players. We can’t do anything about injuries like yours, he fell on your leg. But all of these groin, hamstring injuries etc. shouldn’t be happening as much as they are."
KD then realized the miscommunication that took place and replied:
"Stan, I agree with you lol."
The exchange became a meme sensation over the course of a few weeks on social media as the generation gap over slang definitions was present.
At the time, Kevin Durant was recovering from a knee injury he sustained on Jan. 8. Now, KD is recovering from an ankle injury as he was only able to play for three games with his new team, the Phoenix Suns. The timetable for his return is still in question as he will be re-evaluated in three weeks.
