Steph Curry's ex-teammate drops F-bomb in response to Trae Young’s bold claim
Steph Curry and Trae Young are two of the best-undersized point guards in the NBA today. The Golden State Warriors franchise cornerstone and the Atlanta Hawks star are excellent playmakers and have almost unlimited range. Curry, though, has had success that Young hasn’t come close to even sniffing.
On the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game" podcast on Monday, Young had a comment that quickly went viral. The three-time All-Star had this to say when asked to compare his game to other NBA players:
“They just out there tall, and that’s all. … If I was 6’8, I feel like I would be the best player ever to play this game. Just because of my mentality and the way I play and just the smartness I have.”
Nate Robinson, one of Steph Curry’s former teammates, reacted to Young’s claim, writing on Instagram:
“Lol wtf”
Trae Young’s claim seems questionable considering he is not even the best point guard under 6-foot-3. Besides Curry, there are other players of the same height or shorter than Young who can claim that distinction. Jerry West, Steve Nash, John Stockton, Isiah Thomas, Chris Paul and a handful more are more accomplished and maybe better skilled than “Ice Trae.”
Even if Young grows six more inches, getting that best-ever player honor is no guarantee. Some of the best players in NBA history play small forward, including LeBron James, Larry Bird, Kevin Durant, Elgin Baylor, Carmelo Anthony and many others. Young will not likely make the top 10 in most fans’ votes for the best 6-foot-8 or taller player.
Fans react to Trae Young’s bold claim
It wasn’t just Nate Robinson who reacted to Trae Young’s incredible claim. The Hawks guard’s conviction isn’t shared by most basketball fans on Instagram.
“If LeBron was 6’0 he’d still be better than Trae.”
One fan did not hold back:
“You’re not even the best player at your own height in the league currently, lol.”
Another fan dragged Shaq into the conversation:
“yeah and if Shaq could pull up from 40 he would be too.”
Trae Young, although undersized, is one of the deadliest offensive forces in the NBA today. He can punish opponents with his scoring and playmaking. “Ice Trae” is also a big-game player who relishes the pressure and tension of high-stakes playoff games.
Young’s height and size, though, have nothing to do with his lackadaisical effort on the defensive end. He has become a punching bag of jokes for his disastrous plays on that end. Chris Paul, Allen Iverson and Steph Curry have a much better two-way impact than Young.
What Trae Young said on Monday will not be easily forgotten. Many will likely bring up his comments if he struggles next season.
