Steph Curry shares kind words for Germany's sharpshooter who emulates his game - "He requires your attention at all times"
Steph Curry and Team USA held on for a 92-88 victory over Germany during Monday's final pre-Olympic showcase game in London. Afterward, the superstar point guard praised the "Steph Curry of Germany," German sharpshooter Andreas Obst.
Curry tallied 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, one block and one 3-pointer, shooting 38.5% as the Americans finished their exhibition schedule 5-0.
While Curry had a rough shooting night by his standards, American superstar forward LeBron James picked up the offensive slack. James scored a game-high 20 points, including Team USA's final 11, to clinch the victory.
Among Germany's biggest standouts was Obst, who once again lit it up from deep. He recorded 17 points and five 3s, shooting 46.2%.
After the contest, Curry raved about Obst, who reportedly emulated his game after him. The four-time NBA champion highlighted how Obst's outside shooting threat constantly commands opposing defenses' attention.
"He can shoot it, he's got a quick release, he's fearless," Curry said. "So, it’s pretty awesome to know the comparison, obviously, of guys that have watched me play for a long time and have modeled a little bit of their game after me. But he’s a great shooter. Saw it last year and saw it tonight. He requires your attention at all times."
Obst also garnered the global spotlight during last year's FIBA World Cup semifinal matchup against Team USA. He memorably amassed a game-high 24 points, six assists, two steals and four 3-pointers on 54.5% shooting as Germany secured a 113-111 upset victory. However, Curry was not part of the Americans' World Cup roster.
Given Obst's consistently strong play against NBA players, many have called for an NBA team to give him an opportunity. However, it remains to be seen if the German sharpshooter would ever consider transitioning to the league.
Andreas Obst on playing against his idol, Steph Curry
After Team USA's victory over Germany, Andreas Obst spoke about matching up against his role model, Steph Curry.
According to Obst, he had the matchup marked on his calendar.
"I was really looking forward to it. He was my role model since I was growing up," Obst said. "He changed the game, and I was highly motivated to play against him. So, it was a really special day for me, actually."
After dispatching Germany, Curry and Team USA will prepare for their first Paris Summer Olympic contest against Serbia on Sunday. According to the 10-time NBA All-Star, his squad is ready for the challenge.
"We’ve had every experience," Curry said. "Now it’s obviously a matter of showing up when the lights are bright next week. I think we’re ready. I think we’re prepared. Now we have to perform."
