Steph Curry and wife Ayesha Curry team up with Michelle Obama's health-conscious PLEZi nutrition brand
Steph Curry is partnering with his wife and the former first lady of the United States to help combat unhealthy eating habits in America's youth. The Golden State Warriors sharpshooter posted to Instagram to announce his partnership with PLEZi Nutrition, a sports drink company focused on lowering sugar levels in beverages.
"Kids consume an average of 53 lbs. of added sugar per year, mostly from sugary drinks—that’s absurd," captioned Curry.
The partnership is a joint effort with his wife Ayesha Curry, and it connects them with former first lady Michelle Obama, who co-founded the company.
Obama has been a staunch advocate for kids' health since her time in Washington, D.C. When her husband, 44th President of the United States Barack Obama, was in office, she launched the "Let's Move" initiative that targeted youth involvement in athletics and exercise.
"I’ve learned that if you want to change the game on this issue, you can’t just rally support from the outside," Obama said, via the PLEZi website. "You’ve got to get inside. You’ve got to find ways to change the food and beverage industry itself. So that’s exactly what I’m doing."
"We’re hoping not just to provide healthier and delicious drinks and snacks for kids, but to jumpstart a race to the top that will transform the entire food industry," she added.
PLEZi and Curry say that the beverage has over 70 percent less sugar than "leading fruit juices" and contains real fruit juice
Steph Curry quiet in USA exhibition win over Australia
Steph Curry has been quiet in his start to international play this summer, playing in both exhibition matches so far without making much of an impact.
He shot 1-6 from 3-point range in Monday's 98-92 win over Australia. He's been a starter in both games, along with LeBron James and Joel Embiid.
Team USA will turn to Curry for plenty of 3-point opportunities at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the team generally lacking designated shooters from the perimeter. Aside from Curry, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards has made the most 3-pointers in their two matches. He hit three in a row in the first quarter of their game vs. Australia in Abu Dhabi.
They play their first official match against three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and his Serbian squad on July 28 in Paris. Steph Curry will look to get hot from beyond the arc, which will actually be a touch closer to the rim than what he is used to in the NBA.
