Steve Kerr finally speaks out about Klay Thompson's departure from the Warriors: "These things rarely go like you want"

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, currently on duty with Team USA, broke his silence about Klay Thompson's departure. The shooting guard spent 13 years with the Dubs before agreeing to sign a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks at the start of free agency.

Kerr was one of the last people to say something on this decision and he went deep when talking about his former player. The veteran coach had nothing but positive things to say about Klay Thompson's tenure with the Warriors, where he won four NBA championships in six trips to the Finals.

"I just want to say thank you to Klay Thompson for 13 incredible years, 10 of which I was there for," Kerr began. "What he did for the team, the organization, for me personally, the relationship that we had, all of the incredible success. But more importantly, just going through it all together has just been so meaningful and so amazing."

Kerr, who was a member of the dynastic Chicago Bulls teams of the 90s, also pointed out the difficulty of keeping a dynasty together until the end.

"We're going to miss Klay and we wish him the best. These things rarely go like you want, where you get to draw it up and execute it and everybody goes out together. We were hoping that could happen, but it didn't. We wish Klay well and we love him and we'll miss him. Klay if you're watching, thank you for everything," Kerr said.

Thompson left a huge mark on the Warriors with some of his performances, especially during their championship runs. Despite his struggles in the past two seasons, he will be remembered as an all-time great Warrior.

Klay Thompson penned heartfelt message to Warriors fans after agreeing to Mavs deal

Klay Thompson also had a touching message for the Warriors fanbase and organization. After making his first public appearance following his divorce from the Dubs, the guard took to Instagram to send a goodbye message.

"The best part was not the rings though, it was the friendships I made that will last a lifetime . My family and I would like to thank all of the amazing people who work tirelessly to make the @warriors organization world-class. Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened . Until we meet again. Now, Thompson is getting ready to share touches with two stars like Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. They are coming off a season where they reached the NBA Finals and perhaps this addition is what they need to win their second championship.
