Steve Kerr gets brutally honest on building championship level team around 36-year-old Steph Curry
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr remains optimistic about the franchise's chances of winning more NBA championships with Steph Curry at the helm. During Curry's tenure, the Warriors have captured four titles, the most recent in 2022.
The past two seasons, however, have not lived up to expectations. Last year, the Curry and the Warriors fell short of the playoffs after a loss in the play-in tournament. The year before, they were eliminated in the second round, losing 4-2 to the Lakers.
This season marks the start of a new chapter for the Warriors as Curry's longtime teammate Klay Thompson departed to join the Dallas Mavericks. The team started the season strongly but quickly faced a harsh reality, enduring a string of tough losses.
The Warriors recognize the need to bolster their roster around Curry to remain competitive in a challenging Western Conference. Despite Curry approaching the twilight of his career, Kerr is confident that, with the right support, the superstar guard can still lead the team to championship glory.
“I think the answer to that is yes, it’s realistic," Kerr said on the "95.7 The Game" podcast when asked building a championship level team around Curry.
"This is a once in a generation player and athlete… We have to give him every resource to try to take us home again because we’ve watched him do it four times so that’s why we’re doing what we’re doing."
Golden State is currently ranked seventh in the conference standings with a 14-11 record after playing 25 games.
Steph Curry in 2024-25 season
At 36 years old, Steph Curry continues to carry the weight of a franchise and the expectations of millions of fans. While the four-time NBA champion hasn’t delivered the same dazzling performances that defined the past decade of his career, he remains a key figure for the Golden State Warriors.
This season, the perennial All-Star is averaging 23.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He is shooting 45.2% from the field, including an impressive 42.1% from beyond the arc.
As the season heads into its crucial stretch, with games coming thick and fast and teams vying to climb the standings, Curry is expected to elevate his play, something he has done consistently throughout his career.
The Warriors’ franchise superstar will return to action on Thursday when the team takes on the Memphis Grizzlies.
