"This is completely false"- Sneaker enthusiast Darryl Glover shuts down Snoop Dogg's claim of owning Kobe Bryant’s 81-pt game shoes
Snoop Dogg has long been a diehard Los Angeles Lakers fan, frequently photographed courtside at Lakers games or rocking LA gear. During a stream with popular content creator Kai Cenat on Monday, Snoop alleged that he had one of the shoes Kobe Bryant wore during his legendary 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors. He even pointed out that the shoe was signed by Kobe specifically for him.
Kai Cenat was visibly in awe of memorabilia, but there's one problem, the shoe Snoop Dogg had on display didn't release until 2017. Sneaker enthusiast Darryl Glover, who manages a Kobe Bryant fan page on Instagram, was quick to call out the rapper for the misleading info.
"This is completely false," Darryl Glover posted on X. "This isn’t the same shoe or the same model that Kobe wore when he scored 81 points in 2006. The shoe in that frame is the Kobe AD Mid, that released in 2017."
The shoe Snoop had on display was a pair of Nike Kobe AD Mids, which weren't released until 2017. During his remarkable 81-point scoring outburst on Jan. 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant was wearing a pair of the Nike Zoom Kobe 1 shoes.
Snoop Dogg explains how Kobe Bryant is his hero even though the NBA legend was younger than him
While Snoop Dogg may be older than Kobe Bryant, he once explained how Kobe Bryant is his hero. During an appearance (in 2021) on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," which was guest-hosted by Stephen A. Smith, the rapper explained that the two rose to prominence together.
When Bryant was drafted in 1996, Snoop Dogg had just released his second album, Tha Doggfather, earning him widespread recognition.
"It felt like we both arrived at the same time ... and then I seen him build a family I built a family, I've seen our careers go into a different light to where we became fathers and we became more positive role models outside of what we were doing.
"I was known for rap he was known for basketball, but outside of our professions we were becoming better people and that's what made him my hero is that you could be younger than me ... but if you do things that inspire me you could be my hero."
You can see his comments in the video above beginning shortly after the 3-minute mark.
This summer, the rapper honored Kobe Bryant during the Olympics with his custom tracksuit, making sure that the world remembers the NBA legend.
