"Thought this was Centel" - Jalen Brunson reacts to Noah Lyles dissing Anthony Edwards after declining Adidas event invite
Jalen Brunson reacted to Noah Lyles' comments about getting invited to attend an Adidas event for Anthony Edwards. Lyles was not happy in February when it happened and dissed the Minnesota Timberwolves. Now that the interview got some traction, Brunson couldn't believe what the American sprinter had said.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the New York Knicks superstar was confused for a second when he saw Lyles' remarks about Edwards. He even thought that it was a satire post by a popular parody page before realizing it was not.
"Damn I thought this was Centel," Brunson tweeted.
Noah Lyles was reportedly negotiating a new deal with Adidas in February when he was invited by the company to attend an event for Anthony Edwards.
Lyles was not particularly thrilled with the idea, as he was already a six-time world champion at that point, while Edwards hadn't even made an NBA Finals appearance.
"You want to do what? You want to invite me to (an event for) a man who has not even been to an NBA Finals? In a sport that you don't even care about? And you're giving him a shoe? No disrespect, the man is an amazing athlete. He is having a heck of a year.
"I love that they saw the insight to give him a shoe because they saw that he was going to be big. All I'm asking is, 'How could you not see that for me?," Lyles told Time Magazine in an interview in June.
Adidas has not been huge in basketball for a long time since Nike got superstars like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. They did sign Anthony Edwards and gave him his signature shoe. He has enough star power to possibly resurrect the brand in terms of basketball.
Meanwhile, Noah Lyles signed a new deal with Adidas, making him the face of the company's track and field. Lyles' contract is reportedly the largest one since Usain Bolt, considered one of the GOATs of the sport.
Team USA takes shot at Noah Lyles after gold medal win
While Noah Lyles' "World Champions of What" comments last year were aimed at the NBA champions, USA Basketball is taking the petty route.
After Team USA's win over France to take home another gold medal, the basketball governing body of the United States took a shot at Lyles on social media.
"Are we the World Champs now?," the account tweeted.
In fairness to Lyles, he took home a gold and a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. His comments about Edwards will likely further his feud against the basketball community, so there's possibly more to come once the NBA season starts in a couple of months.
