Victor Wembanyama Stats: How did the Spurs star fare against Portland Trail Blazers (Dec. 21)
Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs hosted the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year went 1-for-4 in the first quarter but anchored the Spurs' defense. Wemby had three blocks and altered multiple shots near the rim.
The Frenchman got going on offense in the second period. He had nine points to help carry the hosts to a 60-44 halftime lead. Wemby continued his defensive impact, swatting three more shots and dominating the paint on defense.
Wembanyama received plenty of help from his Spurs co-starters. Chris Paul already had six points and seven assists. Jeremy Sochan contributed eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
The 7-foot-4 Frenchman grabbed an offensive rebound before opening the San Antonio Spurs attack with a tip-in basket. Wemby had 15 points, four rebounds and two assists in the third quarter. The hosts kept the driver’s seat, leading 87-69 heading into the final frame.
The Frenchman added four more points in the fourth quarter before Spurs coach Mitch Johnson took him out for good. Johnson didn’t see the need to let Wemby play as San Antonio cruised to a 114-94 victory.
