Warriors Trade Rumors: Former LeBron James teammate potential target for backup to Steph Curry

Leading up to trade season in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors are a team at the center of numerous rumors. Along with being tied to a handful of star-level players, there are also some high-quality role players on their radar.

On Tuesday morning, Shams Charania put out a column of all his latest intel from around the league. When it came to Golden State, veteran guard Dennis Schroder was cited as a possible depth piece to add around Steph Curry.

"The Nets have received trade interest and opened exploratory conversations around forwards Cam Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Dennis Schroder, sources said."
"The Warriors are among the teams that have expressed interest in those three players, sources said. The 31-year-old Schroder is having a standout season on a $13 million salary, averaging 18.6 points and 6.5 assists.”

Schroder has been a showcase player for the Brooklyn Nets this season, averaging 18.6 points and 6.5 assists. Throughout his career, he's proven to be a productive sixth man who is capable of playing off of stars. Throughout his 12-year career, he has had the opportunity to play alongside numerous high-level talents, most notably LeBron James, with whom he had two stints with the LA Lakers.

Armed with young players and contracts of all sizes, Golden State is in a good position to make numerous moves before the trade deadline.

Would Dennis Schroder be a good addition for the Golden State Warriors?

In the midst of one of his best seasons in the NBA, Dennis Schroder is sure to garner a lot of interest in the coming months. The veteran guard could be an upgrade for the Golden State Warriors, but the move could be lateral depending on what else they do.

Last week, Charania reported that Golden State is star hunting leading up to the February deadline. If they're able to secure a high-level player to pair with Steph Curry, targeting Schroder makes sense. However, if they fail to do so, they might be better off going in a different direction.

Right now, the Warriors have flooded the roster with strong depth around their superstar guard. Schroder is a reliable two-way guard, but at the end of the day, is still just a high-quality role player. What would make him a needle-moving acquisition would be if Golden State had a new star duo that could lead them.

With backup point guards always being valuable in the NBA, Golden State will have to enter a bidding war for Schroder. If it's him alone, the front office shouldn't waste valuable assets going after just another depth piece. Especially considering Schroder will only be a rental.

From a financial standpoint, Golden State can easily match Schroder's $13 million salary. They could use De'Anthony Melton's contract for most of the filler as he was recently shut down with a season-ending injury.
