Kyrie Irving's name rang out after the Boston Celtics swept the Indiana Pacers with a Game 4 win at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Monday. Irving, a former Celtic and now with the Dallas Mavericks is one win away from facing off against the Eastern Conference champs in the NBA Finals.
A video of Celtics fans chanting "F*** Kyrie" did the rounds on Twitter/X soon after the 105-102 win against Indiana. The streets were crowded and Irving's name had an expletive attached as the chants continued well after the win.
You can view the clip below:
The crowd, with some wearing Boston jerseys were all seen chanting in unison on the streets after the win. The incident just shows that the Boston fans are from forgiving the 8x NBA All-Star after he moved to the Brooklyn Nets after two seasons with the Celtics.
Kendrick Perkins asks Boston Celtics fans to leave Kyrie Irving alone
Kyrie Irving left Boston during free agency in 2019. The reason was that he wanted to return closer to his home in New Jersey and added that the decision was also influenced by the passing of his grandfather early in the 2018-19 NBA season.
His exit though came as a shocker to fans as they spewed vitriol at the guard. Later, he had his skirmishes with them during the 2021 and 2022 playoffs. Instances include flipping off the crowd and stomping the Celtics' logo.
The exchanges all but showed the bad blood between the two and now if the Mavericks do beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in one more game, they will face the Celtics in the NBA Finals.
Earlier, former Boston big Kendrick Perkins warned the Boston fans to ease up on their Irving roast. Speaking on the Stephen A. Smith Show, he said (Starts at 1:24):
“OK, boo him, do whatever you want. But please, I’m warning you guys, do not take it over. Leave him alone. … We know that they’re going to boo him. But the excessive thing, like the things where fans gotta get escorted out the arena. Leave him alone. I’m telling y’all, it’s for y’all best interest. Leave that man alone. That man is playing his (expletive) off. He’s on a mission.”
Perkins was not wrong. Irving has been a force for Dallas this season averaging 22.4 points per game and shooting 49.2% from the field. With Luka Doncic in tow, the Mavs are on the cusp of the NBA Finals. Kyrie Irving and the Mavericks will meet the T-Wolves for a decisive Game 4 on Tuesday, May 28.
