Jaylen Wells had his first euphoric moment in an NBA uniform with the Memphis Grizzlies. The rookie beat the buzzer with a high-arching floater to lift the Grizzlies to an 87-85 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Salt Lake City Summer League on Tuesday.
The Memphis Grizzlies forward grabbed a rebound with a couple of seconds left and threw up a hailmary that went in for the win. Here’s the video:
The shot capped off Jaylen Wells’ impressive outing as he finished with 27 points and six rebounds to lead the Grizzlies to their first win in the NBA Summer League.
Wells struggled in his first game with the Grizzlies, scoring 1-of-9, on Tuesday. He took a bigger role versus the 76ers, as Zach Edey, GG Jackson and Jake LaRavia didn't play.
In the post-game interview, Wells raved about the opportunity of playing a bigger role with the Grizzlies. He also expressed his excitement after draining the game-winning shot.
"It felt good," Wells said on the ESPN broadcast after the game. "I missed a lot of shots. I don't think I airballed so many times in my career. But my team just kept believing in me. I’m glad they kept believing in me.
Wells shot 9-for-23 from the field, including 3-for-7 from the 3-point range. He also added three assists and one steal in the game. Wells and the Grizzlies will be back in the Summer League court on Wednesday against the Oklahoma CIty Thunder.
Jaylen Wells signs rookie scale deal with the Memphis Grizzlies
Jaylen Wells is one of three rookies the Memphis Grizzlies drafted in this year’s NBA draft. He was drafted with the 39th overall overall pick in the second round.
In a report by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Wells signed a four-year, $7.9 million contract with the Grizzlies, with the first two years being fully guaranteed. With tht, Wells becomes one of the top earners among rookies drafted in the second round.
Wells played two years with the Washington State University after averaging 22.4 points in his sophomore year with a Division 2 team, Sonoma State.
A known shooter in college, he normed 12.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 41.7% from the 3-point area in his last year with the WSU.
Jaylen Wells is expected to add shooting to space the floor for the Grizzlies, who will see the return of Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. next season. The team is also fortified by rookie Zach Edey, who was picked by the Grizzlies with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the draft.
