Watch: Mavericks guard captures Klay Thompson's wild boat plunge during NBA offseason
The NBA offseason is the perfect time for players to make the most of their spare time before another 82-game grind commences, which is the case for Dallas Mavericks stars Klay Thompson and Quentin Grimes. The former Golden State Warriors guard is also known as "Captain Klay" for owning a yacht. Featured on Grimes' Instagram stories, Thompson was seen performing a high boat plunge.
Thompson and Grimes were part of the offseason acquisitions by Dallas to bolster their roster and increase the team's chances of making another trip to the NBA Finals. Before their season together commences, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Mavericks players were in LA for workouts.
Klay Thompson finished his 11th and final season with the Warriors by averaging 17.9 points (43.2% shooting) and 3.3 rebounds per game. His shooting numbers weren't the usual production that basketball fans were accustomed to as he struggled with his shotmaking throughout last season.
Meanwhile, Quentin Grimes played 45 games with the New York Knicks and six with the Detroit Pistons last season. He could be a reliable contributor coming off the bench for the Mavericks while not being a defensive liability.
Mavericks coach talks about the acquisition of Klay Thompson
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said on NBC Sports Bay Area's "Dubs Talk" podcast that eight-time NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving was also involved in the trade negotiations.
"It was a lot of people that were involved in [Klay Thompson's recruitment]," Kidd said. "But one of the biggest players in that was Ky [Kyrie Irving]. They all talk about their situations, and they all recruit one another — this was about Ky and Klay being able to talk."
Before Irving could call Dallas his home, he came from a rollercoaster experience with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets. A lot of locker room frustrations and off-court issues hampered his progress with those two teams.
However, Irving entered his 13th season in the league with a different approach. ESPN's Brian Windhorst highlighted this on a segment of "Get Up," where he saw the All-Star guard being a mentor to Luka Doncic and the rest of the young guys on his team.
He is coming off one of his best postseason outings yet. One can associate his situation with Klay Thompson, who underwent several changes in his final stint with Golden State. Whether it was being moved to the second unit or his offensive inconsistencies on the court, a new environment might just be what he needs at this stage of his career.
