Despite the hype surrounding Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs were one of the worst teams in the league. However, as Wemby is entering his second season, it might finally be the season that he breaks out. Given that he is playing under a great coach like Gregg Popovich, it is not an unlikely scenario.

Can it be a breakout season for Victor Wembanyama with Chris Paul by his side?

There are big expectations from Victor Wembanyama going into the season. The San Antonio Spurs star had a stellar rookie season. With one year of experience in his bag, Wemby's understanding has increased.

The Spurs made one of the low-key trades this offseason, acquiring Chris Paul from the Golden State Warriors. However, according to NBA legend Gary Payton, the presence of Paul with Wembanyama could do wonders for the French player.

“Chris Paul is going to make him a lot better," Payton said. "He’s going to get him in the right places and get him the ball at the right time, and then once he gets stronger and a little bit more seasoning, it’s going to be hard to stop him," Payton told The Athletic.

Last season, Wembanyama had one of the greatest rookie seasons that the league has ever witnessed. Wemby led the league in blocks, won the Rookie of the Year Award, and was named a member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team.

In 71 games, Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points per game while he shot 46.5% from the field. He also averaged 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.6 blocks per game.
