"We need more women supporting them": Carmelo Anthony deep dives on how to elevate females in women sports
Even after retirement, Carmelo Anthony remains closely involved with the game of basketball. Last year, Anthony was named the Global Ambassador for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
During his time in the NBA, Carmelo Anthony was one of the top international players , with three Olympic gold medals and a bronze medal to his name.
In an appearance on the AfroBallers podcast with Ivy Winfrey, Carmelo Anthony discussed the increasing popularity of basketball for men and women. He offered his support for the continually growing landscape of women's sports.
In the interview, Anthony was asked about his thoughts on the energy women can bring to basketball as players and businesswomen.
"Yeah it's needed. I think that the way sports are actually going and where it's going, just that whole asset class is booming, and women's sports in general. With women's sports, we need more women supporting them from the outside. So while we should do that as men, we should support that as business people. As business owners, we should support that. For me, my whole team is women. I have probably 10 to 12 women on my team that I work with every single day, and it just happened that way. It's like, I don't know how I ended up with 12," Anthony stated on the show.
Anthony also added that he feels it is important to use his platform to uplift and promote the women he works with.
Carmelo Anthony prefers Olympic gold to NBA championship gold
In a separate interview with BasketNews, Carmelo Anthony was asked if he would trade his three Olympic gold medals for an NBA championship. He answered, "When we talk about a global sport, for me a medal means something totally different than an NBA championship.
Anthony then said, "They both have their own separate meanings, but winning a gold medal, it's the passion, it's the pride that you have, not just for a city or state, for a whole nation, for a whole country you're winning for."
As an Olympian, Carmelo Anthony was one of the best players in Team USA history. The prolific scorer is tied with LeBron James for the second-most Olympic gold medals won.
In 29 Olympic contests, Anthony is the third-highest scorer in Team USA history, netting 336 points and averaging 10.8 per game. Carmelo Anthony also holds the record for points in a single game for Team USA, with 37 tallies versus Nigeria in 2012.
