What happened to Matt Barnes' son Zay? Reason behind former Lakers guard kid's emergency surgery revealed
Former NBA player Matt Barnes shared that one of his sons, Zay, had to go through surgery following an accident on Sunday. Barnes posted a photo of his son on his Instagram account and shared with his followers what his family has gone through over the past week.
According to Barnes, his son was hit by a car on Wednesday while he was jogging. And if that wasn't scary enough, the high schooler had to go through an emergency appendix surgery.
"My guys had a tough week. Hit by a car while jogging Wednesday 🤦🏽♂️ had a bad stomach ache Friday tried to play through the Mamba Invitational, couldn’t sleep all Friday night decided to FINALLY tell his mom & I yesterday when he couldn’t move.. I took him to the emergency room & he had to have emergency appendix surgery," Barnes wrote on his IG post.
"Doctor said it was the largest appendix he had ever seen that hadn’t ruptured."
At the end of his post, he thanked his family and friends for the love and support they gave when his son had a tough week. His ex-wife, Gloria Govan, shared photos on her Instagram stories, showing she was with her son during the surgery.
Barnes has three kids: Zay and his twin brother, Carter, and Ashton, who he shares with fiancée Anansa Sims.
In a recent update from Barnes, he showed that his twin sons were reunited after Zay underwent the much-needed surgery. The two boys shared a hug, and Zay even showed Carter the scar he got from his recent trip to the hospital.
His twin sons are the backcourt duo for Crespi Carmelite High School. Zay plays the shooting guard position, while Carter controls the offense as the point guard.

Matt Barnes' kids have Derek Fisher as their stepdad
Barnes' former LA Lakers teammate, Derek Fisher, became romantically involved with Govan in 2015. It led to a physical altercation between the two former colleagues, but eventually, the two were able to solve their differences and move on with their lives.
Fisher and Govan were engaged in 2018 and exchanged vows in 2021. The former NBA player was hired as a head coach by Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California. That's the same school that his stepsons study and play for.
