What is Zach Edey's draft projection? Exploring Purdue’s 7’4”center's chances to make it into NBA
Zach Edey and the Purdue Boilermakers are looking to make a run in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. For Edey, it will present another opportunity for him to make a case in front of NBA scouts and executives.
Edey has been one of college basketball's most dominant centers this year. The 7-foot-4, 294-pound big man is a physically imposing presence who offers versatility on both sides of the ball. The junior, who was the Big Ten Player of the Year and the Sporting News National Player of the Year, can give nightmares to opposing defenders on a nightly basis. But what does that mean when it comes to his NBA draft projection?
On paper, Edey looks to have the production to be a first-round pick. During his sophomore season, the Purdue big man averaged 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds. Edey has taken his game to another level during the 2022-23 season. Heading into tournament play, Edey is averaging 22.3 ppg, 12.8 rpg and 2.1 blocks per game.
Zach Edey looking to improve draft projection in NCAA Tournament
Purdue Boilermakers center Zach Edey has been one of the most impressive players in the country this year. But that production doesn’t guarantee that Edey will be hearing his name early on June 22, the night of the 2023 NBA draft.
Edey has been a marvel throughout the 2022-23 NCAA season. For a player of his size, it’s not difficult to see why the junior has been so productive. But Edey will have to convince NBA organizations that there’s a role for him at the next level.
The modern NBA game has gotten away from the physically imposing big man style that Edey will hang his hat on. The old-school big man, who would often get fed in the post game on a regular basis, has faded.
Today’s game has an emphasis on versatility and players who can space the floor, even at the center position. Even elite big men such as Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic and Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid have the ability to stretch the floor with their outside shooting.
While the odds are stacked against Edey to hear his name in the first- ound, there’s still a chance his game can intrigue teams at some point. While Edey overpowers defenders with his strength, he’s also shown soft hands and great touch around the basket.
Purdue is set to take on Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. From there, the Boilermakers will potentially face the winner of the matchup between FAU and Memphis. For Edey, a strong performance and lengthy tournament run could start to draw the attention of NBA scouts.
