Who is David Singleton? How is the UCLA senior emerging as the best sixth man in fifth-year of his college? All you need to know
David Singleton has been one of the most important players on the UCLA Bruins roster. While Singleton might not put up the most eye-opening numbers, his contribution cannot be overstated.
Singleton is the veteran of the Bruins roster. As a fifth-year senior, Singleton knows that his role is to do whatever is required for the team. That's just what he's continued to do, and the 16th-ranked Bruins (9-2, 2-0 Pac-12) are thriving because of it.
David Singleton is averaging a career-high 10.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game through 11 games. What's even more impressive is his efficiency. In just 26.7 minutes, Singleton is shooting 51.2% from the field, including 50.0% from 3-point range, and 90.0% from the charity stripe.
David Singleton and UCLA look to make noise in 2022-23 season
The UCLA Bruins came into the season with plenty of fascinating players on their roster. Upperclassmen such as Jaime Jaquez and Tyger Campbell were expected to lead the charge.
Incoming freshmen Amari Bailey and Adem Bona were expected to provide a serious spark. Junior wing Jaylen Clark has become one of the most unique players on the roster as well.
But the impact of senior David Singleton as a sixth man cannot be ignored. Singleton has been a player who continues to rise to the occasion whenever his number is called. His most recent performance in Wednesday's 87-60 win over 20th-ranked Maryland was a perfect example of that.
Singleton finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting in just 24 minutes. When the Bruins have needed a spark this year, coach Mick Cronin has turned to Singleton to provide it.
Singleton was the 2018 Gatorade California Player of the Year and was ranked as the No. 67 player in his class by ESPN. He's played in 138 games and started 25 at UCLA. He's had one start this season.
The Bruins' next game will be another challenging one as UCLA takes on the 13th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats (7-2) on Saturday. The Bruins can expect to climb up the rankings if they pull off a victory against UK.
If they are going to accomplish that, they will need the assistance of their valuable sixth man. The Bruins have won six in a row after a pair of losses to Illinois (currently ranked 18th) and Baylor (currently ranked 11th). Time will tell if the Bruins can continue to march on and secure control of the Pac-12.
