Who is head coach of Virginia Tech basketball? Taking a closer look at the coaching staff personnel

Mike Young has been a name on the rise in college basketball throughout his coaching career. That's just why Virginia Tech hired Young back in 2019 to get their program back on track.

Young was a longtime coach at Wofford, starting as an assistant in 1989. In 2002, the program named him head coach. After taking over the Terriers, immediate success didn't come for Wofford. It wouldn't be until his seventh season at Wofford in which the program finished above .500.

But that was just the beginning for Young, as the Terriers went 47-22 in their next two seasons. Wofford made the NCAA Tournament in both of those seasons. Their most impressive year came in 2018-19, when the Terriers went 30-5, earning the No.7 seed before losing in the second round to the Kentucky Wildcats.

It would be the final season for Young with the program, as Virginia Tech came calling to make him its next head coach. Once again, Young found himself with the challenge of trying to rebuild a program.

Since taking over the Virginia Tech Hokies in 2019, Young has had some encouraging results. In just his third year with the program, Virginia Tech finished the 2021-22 season with an impressive 23-13 record.

Young and the Hokies finished 19-15 this season. It will be a measuring stick for the program, as the Hokies hope to make a statement in the upcoming year.

The pieces are in place for the team to take the next step forward in its development. Young is joined on his coaching staff by assistant head coach Mike Jones, who previously coached for 19 years at national prep powerhouse DeMatha. During his time with the program, Jones posted an impressive all-time record of 511-119.

The Hokies also have assistant coach Christian Webster on their staff. He has been with the program since 2016. Webster was specifically retained by Mike Young when he took over the job in 2019. He's been a key part of the program's success and has played a large role in the development of previous key players, such as former first-round draft pick Justin Robinson.
