Why is Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards postponed: All you need to know

Earlier today, news broke that the NBA has postponed Wednesday's Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards matchup. The league was forced to push things back due to travel concerns for one of the teams.

On Monday night, the Pistons were in Dallas to take on the Mavericks. As of Wednesday morning, the team was still in Texas due to weather issues. The state has been dealing with extreme weather conditions and there is possible freezing rain coming. Due to these factors, it was deemed unsafe for the team to fly.

The flight from Texas to Washington is nearly four hours and corsses a time zone. Forcing a team to travel and play in that situation in one day is unfair. After debating what to do, the NBA came to the decision to have this Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards matchup at a later date.

The league hoped to just have to delay tip-off, but things changed after the team was still unable to get in the air on Wednesday.

I was told they initially considered pushing the tip-off back if the Pistons were able to get on a plane in the morning. It’s noon here and they’re still not on a plane. twitter.com/hmich16/status…

According to recent reports, the Pistons hope to be able to leave Texas on Thursday. This gives them just enough time to regather themselves before having a back-to-back at home this weekend.

Pistons have a home-home B2B Friday and Saturday. They’re now hoping to fly back on Thursday.

There has been no reschedule date as of now, per sources.

Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards might not be the only game that's postponed

Following the days of the COVID-19 pandeminc, the NBA hoped that the days of postponing games was over. However, that is not the case.

Along with the Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards getting pushed back, another game might be forced to get delayed as well. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that another game could be in jepordy.

On Thursday night, the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans are slated to face off. That being said, if the weather is still causing issues, the Pelicans might not be able to fly into Texas. This could result in the league being forced to push another game back because of this bad storm.

With concern that the Pistons may not be able to fly out of Dallas until Thursday because of icing issues, there’s obvious uncertainty about the Pelicans’ ability to fly into Dallas today for Thursday's game vs. the Mavericks. Pelicans are in Denver now.

With the season just passing the halfway point, there is more than enough time to sneak in some make-up games. As of now, a new date has not been announced for the Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards matchup.
