Why does NBA host the All-Star Weekend and when did it begin? Exploring its origins and history
The All-Star Weekend has been a tradition by the NBA for a long time and it's been part of a thrilling experience for fans of the league. The three-day weekend is full of fun and exciting moments, and we're here to discuss why the NBA did it and when it started.
Firstly, basketball wasn't as big as the other major sports back when it first started. In the early 1950s, the basketball world was trying to clean its landscape after the CCNY point-shaving scandal. The controversial gambling scandal on the college basketball scene wasn't a good look for the NBA.
The league drew the idea of having an All-Star game, which Major League Baseball was already doing at the time. They were not condifent at first, but it turned out to be a great success.
The first ever All-Star game happened on March 2, 1951. It was a traditional battle between the two conferences and the Eastern Conference All-Stars defeated the Western Conference All-Stars. Boston Celtics' Ed Macauley won the All-Star game Most Valuable Player award.
The game ended with a score of 111–94. The event drew an attendance of 10,094 people, which the league saw as a success. Since then, the NBA All-Star Weekend has become an annual tradition in the league and most fans look forward to seeing which players will make the All-Star team.
