"Why won't he sign with the Lakers?" - NBA fans abuzz over Mavericks signing Markieff Morris for final roster spot
The Dallas Mavericks have continued their strong offseason with another veteran signing. On Saturday, The Athletic reported that Markieff Morris will be returning to the Dallas Mavericks on a one-year deal for the 2024-25 NBA season.
Per the report, Dallas made bringing back Morris a priority as he has served as a strong locker room presence in his time in Dallas.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), fans reacted to the reigning Western Conference champions' move to sign Morris.
"Mavs are better than the Nuggets we all should know this," one fan commented.
"Low key great re-signing," another fan added.
"Great move by the Mavs," a fan said.
Other fans weren't as supportive as the Mavericks supporters, indicating Morris should have signed elsewhere.
"Should've came back to the Lakers," a fan said.
"Why won't he sign with the Lakers or OKC," a fan asked.
Morris will enter his third season in Dallas after landing with the Mavericks in 2022-23, appearing in 34 games and making two starts in two seasons.
In two seasons in Dallas, Morris has averaged 3.0 points and 1.5 rebounds. In 13 seasons, Morris has averaged 10.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg and 1.5 assists per game.
Markieff Morris is the latest signing in Mavericks' offseason
As previously mentioned, the Mavericks have had one of the more active offseasons in the entire NBA, reloading after their finals run in 2023-24.
Along with Morris, the Mavericks added five-time All-Star Klay Thompson, Quentin Grimes and Spencer Dinwiddie. Dallas landed Thompson and Dinwiddie in free agency while adding Grimes in a trade for Tim Hardaway Jr.
Thompson is Dallas' offseason defining move, as he will step in as a third scoring option for the Mavericks behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Despite battling injury, Thompson was efficient for the Golden State Warriors. In 77 games last season, Thompson averaged 17.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 2.3 apg.
Dallas will look for new pickups to help them return to the NBA Finals after losing to the Boston Celtics in the finals last season.
