Would $60 million be enough for Lakers to land Dan Hurley as he runs out $32.1 million deal? Exploring scenarios

Over the past week, a new name has surfaced in the LA Lakers coaching search. After multiple reports of JJ Redick being the favorite to replace Darvin Ham, recent developments have been centered around UConn coach Dan Hurley.

Hurley has extensive experience coaching in college and is fresh off winning back-to-back titles with UConn. If LA were to lure him to the NBA, they'd need to come with a sizable offer.

Following the 2023 season, Hurley signed a six-year deal worth over $32 million with the university. According to reports, buying out of that contract would cost the longtime coach around $2 million. With a buyout needed, the Lakers should factor that into their offer.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that LA is preparing a "lucrative" offer to make Hurley their next coach. New York Post's Zach Braziller reported the Lakers could offer roughly $15 million yearly. So around $60 million should be enough to entice him.

Lakers Sideline reported that if Hurley gets a $15-$17 million annual salary, he would be among the highest-paid coaches in the league. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has the highest salary, shy of $18 million.

Between the massive pay increase and getting to coach LeBron James and Anthony Davis, an offer of this size should get Hurley to LA.

NBA insider details the latest on LA Lakers pursuing Dan Hurley as next head coach

Following Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, Adrain Wojnarowski detailed the latest on Dan Hurley. The ESPN insider reported Hurley is heading to LA Friday to meet with Lakers owners Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka.

Woj also cited that talks between the two sides have "accelerated" as of late, and they are already discussing a potential contract framework:

"The Lakers' pursuit of Hurley to become the franchise's next coach has accelerated and the sides are already discussing the contractual parameters of a potential deal that would be significant in its length and salary, sources said."

If LA wants experience, Hurley is the better option between him and Redick. While the former three-point specialist enjoyed a long career, he broke into the broadcasting field following his playing days Hurley has been coaching in the NCAA since 2010.

Over the past 13 years, Hurley has racked up a record of 292-163. He's led UConn to the NCAA Tournament yearly and delivered two championships.

After being eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs, LA is looking to get back into a position of contention. Bringing in an experienced coach like Hurley could show LeBron and AD that the organization is committed to winning at the highest level.
