Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore group set to takeover full ownership of Timberwolves: Report
Alex Rodriguez is set to add another title to his legacy as a majority owner of an NBA team. The former baseball star, alongside entrepreneur Marc Lore, will officially take full ownership of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.
This marks the end of a prolonged dispute with current owner Glen Taylor, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Taylor purchased the franchise in 1994 for just $94 million. Under his tenure, the team struggled for consistency, while the Lynx became one of the WNBA’s most successful teams, winning four championships between 2011 and 2017.
In 2021, Rodriguez and Lore struck a deal to purchase the Timberwolves and Lynx for $1.5 billion, agreeing to pay in installments. The deal was structured in phases, allowing the duo to gradually increase their stake. By early 2024, they had acquired 40% of the team.
Everything seemed on track until March 2024, when Taylor claimed they had allegedly failed to make a scheduled payment, giving him grounds to void the deal.
Rodriguez and Lore denied this allegation, calling it a case of "seller’s remorse."
With no resolution through direct talks, the matter was taken to arbitration. In February 2025, the panel sided with Rodriguez and Lore, ruling that the sale must proceed. Taylor’s decision to drop an appeal clears the way for the transition.
After years in the making, The deal now awaits final approval from the NBA Board of Governors, requiring a majority vote from at least 23 of the 30 teams.
What’s next for the Timberwolves
With the ownership dispute settled, the focus now shifts to the future of both franchises.
The team has seen its value skyrocket in recent years, thanks to its on-court success and the NBA’s growing media rights deals. Forbes now estimates its worth at $3.1 billion, more than double what Rodriguez and Lore agreed to pay in 2021.
The new ownership group has also expanded, with high-profile investors like former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Google executive Eric Schmidt, and private equity firm Blue Owl Capital joining in.
Rodriguez has expressed his excitement about shaping the Timberwolves’ future. He has already emphasized building around star guard Anthony Edwards, who has emerged as the face of the franchise.
With a new era of leadership, fans are eager to see if the Timberwolves can finally become a consistent contender in the NBA.
