Yesteryear NBA All-Star runs into JJ Redick watching film at car wash, assures Lakers are in 'great hands'
The LA Lakers' JJ Redick-era is off to a hot start, and it's understandable why he's finding early success as a coach. Despite skepticism around his hire because of his lack of experience, Redick was always hailed for his understanding of the game. The former NBA player displayed his high IQ and knowledge during his podcasting and broadcasting days.
Since his hire, the Lakers players have hailed Redick's work ethic and yesteryear All-Star Baron Davis can attest to it. Davis tweeted on Sunday that he ran into the new Lakers coach watching film on a laptop at a car wash ahead of the Lakers' home game against the Kings. Based on what he saw, he hailed Redick's dedication and sent an inspiring message to the Lakers fan base.
"Just ran into @jj_redick at the Car Wash. he had the Laptop watching film!!!! Players coach!!! Lakers in great hands !! #dedication"
Meanwhile, JJ Redick confirmed Baron Davis' tweet during the pre-game press conference. He said he doesn't generally watch game film in public, but a short turnaround left him no option as the Lakers are playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Redick added that his kids also had basketball games and it was his only time to watch the breakdown on the Kings' defense.
JJ Redick's spot on game-planning leads Lakers to first 2-0 start in 14 years
One of the most visible differences for the Lakers compared to last year has been their playcalling and execution. JJ Redick deserves tremendous credit for ensuring his schemes fit LA's roster well. That included making Anthony Davis the focal point of the team on offense.
Davis has had a 30.8% usage rate in two games, the highest on the Lakers and nearly 7.0% more than any other player. It was the hour of the need for LA last year, too. However, the Lakers couldn't figure out a way to execute the schemes needed to use Davis as a hub.
That was Redick's first move. The other one is his in-game adjustments, timeouts and after timeout plays (ATOs). The Lakers often didn't look organized last year, leading to their struggles. That has seemingly changed with Redick, who has introduced more player and ball movement.
Behind those changes, the Lakers recorded their first 2-0 start to a season in 14 years. That included Friday's 22-point comeback win against the star-studded Phoenix Suns.
