"You thought it was over?" - Anthony Edwards' alleged trash talk with Kyrie Irving leaked during Game 4

The 2024 NBA playoffs have been Anthony Edwards’ coming out party, but he has struggled in the series against the Dallas Mavericks, except for Game 4, where he scored 29 points to keep the Minnesota Timberwolves' season alive. A post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed to capture Edwards trash-talking Kyrie Irving.

X user @legendz_nba, known for transcribing player interactions, recently shared a video showing Edwards' reactions during the game.

In one clip, as Irving went past him, Anthony Edwards apparently said:

“You thought it was over?”

The Timberwolves host the Mavericks for Game 5 of the Western Conference finals on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET. If necessary, Game 6 will take place in Dallas on Saturday.

Anthony Edwards’ 29 points were the highest in Game 4, where the Timberwolves, facing elimination, pulled off a 105-100 victory to force a Game 5.

Karl-Anthony Towns also had a big game, scoring 20 of his 25 points in the second half and shooting 9-of-13 from the field, after entering the game with a 28% field goal percentage.

The Mavericks’ star backcourt duo, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, combined for 13 of 39 shooting. Doncic recorded 28 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists, while Irving had 16 points on 18 shots.

The Mavericks-Timberwolves Western Conference semifinals have been filled with trash talk. In Game 2, Doncic hit a game-winning step-back triple in front of Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert and apparently shouted:

“Motherf**er! You can’t f**king guard me!”

Anthony Edwards guarantees Timberwolves will force a Game 6

After the game, Anthony Edwards promised that the Timberwolves would win Game 5 and return to Dallas, motivated by seeing Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons wearing a Luka Doncic jersey and his AE1 shoes.

"Micah Parsons, you know, he was rocking the AE1's and I told him, he wear a size 14, I'll bring him back some nice shoes for Game 6. That's what I told him," Edwards said postgame.

It wasn't the first time Edwards made a bold claim in this year's playoffs.

In the Western Conference semifinals, Anthony Edwards confidently told the Denver Nuggets security staff that he would return for a Game 7 despite being down 3-2 in the series. The Timberwolves successfully defeated the defending champions to set up a clash with Doncic's Mavericks.

No team in NBA history has ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a series, but Edwards is confident the Timberwolves could make history.

"What am I supposed to say? I'm supposed to say we are going to lose Game 5? No, I'll never say that," he said.
