What's the story?

The Phoenix Suns, who currently own one of the worst records in the NBA (19-44), are reportedly in pursuit of former Memphis Grizzlies coach David Fizdale as a full-time head coach, according to Sporting News.

If this goes through, Fizdale will replace interim head coach Jay Triano, who was an assistant coach under Earl Watson.

In case you didn't know...

David Fizdale was a part of Erik Spoelstra's coaching staff at the Miami Heat for 8 years starting 2008. During the Heat's Big Three era, Fizdale and current Suns Vice President of Basketball Operations James Jones developed a rapport, which is thought to be one of the main reasons why the Suns are rumored to be in pursuit of Fizdale.

The heart of the matter

David Fizdale's firing at Memphis was met with by surprise and dismay from around the league, with LeBron James going so far as to state on Twitter: "I need some answers. Feels like my man was a fall guy."

The Los Angeles Lakers are thought to be Fizdale's favored destination according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. The narrative is that Fizdale's presence in LA could be instrumental in helping the Lakers land LeBron James this summer.

What's next?

Fizdale has been recognized around the league as an important part of the coaching setup at Miami which successfully translated the idea of Death Lineups (a lineup of 5 perimeter wing players with the ability to play at multiple positions on both offense and defense) into playoff and championship success. His record as a head coach at the Memphis Grizzlies (43-39 and 5-1 to start this season) is nothing to be scoffed at, either.

At the very least, the Phoenix Suns will improve their putrid offense (ranked 30th on points per 100 plays) should Fizdale agree to sign with the Suns. Fizdale got Marc Gasol spacing the floor and shooting 3-pointers in order to use Randolph as his primary interior weapon.

Author's Take

While signing David Fizdale should definitely impact the Suns' long-term plans positively, considering the young offensive talent they have in Devin Booker and TJ Warren, it is far from a given that the Suns will be successful in their efforts.

The Lakers headed by Magic Johnson is an instant draw for anyone related to NBA basketball, which is perhaps the reason why Fizdale is rumored to be interested in the Lakers job. Luke Walton is doing a commendable job with his youngsters over the past 2 months, though, and enjoys the front office's full support.
